COPD: A Day and Night Approach to Asthma and Chronic Lung Disease Care
Friday, November 16, 2007
The Inn at Spanish Bay
Pebble Beach California
For medical professionals, this course will update best practices for the treatment
of chronic lung disease in children and adults. Content will
encompass a wide range of related topics including diagnostic testing,
medications, durable medical equipment, tobacco use and cardio-
pulmonary rehabilitation. There will be special focus on the care
of complex patients—those who have one or more chronic disorders
such as obesity, heart disease or sleep apnea—which may
affect the diagnosis and appropriate care of COPD. Speakers will
also address macro issues related to chronic disease management
such as cultural competency, reimbursement and access to care.
Needs Assessment and Organizing Committee
Members of the Conference Organizing Committee include practicing
MD's, RRT's, and representatives from public health departments,
hospitals and accrediting sponsors. Their expertise, along
with feedback from prior faculty and attendees, has shaped the
content and format of this conference.
Conference Format
Format consists of lectures as well as smaller, more interactive
workshops. There will be ample opportunities for spontaneous
learning and sharing of experiences. A panel discussion and question
and answer session will conclude the day's course.
Intended Audience
The audience for this Conference will consist of primary care
providers and clinicians, including physicians, registered nurses,
physician assistants, nurse practitioners, respiratory therapists
and sleep technologists.
COURSE OBJECTIVES

patients who have accompanying complications of heart
disease, obesity and sleep disorders

treatment of tobacco-dependent patients
Demonstrate the correct use and interpretation of spirometry
testing in the identification and treatment of tobacco-dependent
patients
Identify the major issues and successful strategies in medical
treatment of patients from different cultural and ethnic

and enumerate similarities and differences between and adult
and pediatric sleep assessment

change and increase awareness of sleep disorders in
children
Summarize new NIH guidelines as they regard the use of
different classes of medications used in asthma and the
assessment of both risk and impairment when determining
asthma severity
Describe the variation in pulmonary symptoms from day to
nighttime in pediatric respiratory disorders and how nighttime
symptoms can help determine the etiology and severity of
pediatric respiratory problems
Describe the cardiac symptomology of untreated lung disease
and sleep disorders
Summarize general guidelines and major updates for
reimbursement for chronic pulmonary disease-related care
