O24u Facilitator’s Guide
BREATHE LA O24u program is an environmental educational program provided to children ages 8-14 years, in after school care in air pollution impacted areas of Los Angeles County.
With train-the-trainer and on-going technical support, the site staff will have the confi dence and freedom to modify the O24u program to meet their specifi c sites needs. For example, of the 56 total sites participating in O24u in the spring of 2008, many will chose to incorporate a 10 week curriculum (once a week), while some will implement an ‘O24u Week' in which the participants will engage in daily O24u activities and discussions. The 024U program curriculum topics include and define:
- Air pollution and environmental changes,
- Health effects of air pollution,
- Toxic indoor environments, and
- The use of alternate fuels and renewable energy
The O24u curriculum includes a pre and post O24u questionnaire, an O24u ‘Be Green' commitment signed by each participant, a detailed resource guide for the facilitators and inspiring stories of kids making a difference for clean air.
Each module contains topic specifi c activities empowering children to make a change for clean air, for example by integrating alternative nontoxic chemicals into their homes, incorporating reduce, recycle and reuse habits into their everyday lives and encouraging them to be advocates for clean air within their community.
