Kick Butts Day with BREATHE LA 4-U-N-I Students
March 25, 2009 was KICK BUTTS DAY, a nationwide youth anti-tobacco action.
BREATHE LA 4UNI Teens Helping Teens Quit Smoking students at Granada Hills High School and Beverly Hills High School took part.
The students participated on their lunch breaks in a test of their World No Tobacco Day project, Text 2 Quit. Clever messages were created, texted and forwarded among students, "Don't smoke or you'll choke" and made an impact in their high schools using popular technology tools.
Using online technology, BREATHE LA scheduled the student - generated text messages and sent them to 4-U-N-I student leaders at participating schools. Once the students received the text messages, they went outside to forward to their friends and encouraged them to pass it along. Students moved through their campuses engaging other groups of studentsand inviting them to take part to pass along the text messages, even after the school day ended.
4UNI student leaders reported they were glad the Kick Butts Day project worked. It only took a few minutes, and appealed to other students. Overall feedback was that texting 2 quit will be a great idea, but students cautioned that to encourage more students to take part, there would need to be an incentive. Prizes and giveways for students taking part in the World No Tobacco Day
