Calabasas Continues to Lead with Expansion of Smoking Ban
Posted January 17th, 2008
The City of Calabasas took additional steps to protect public health from exposure to second hand smoke with the expansion of a citywide ban on smoking in public places. Effective February 16, 2008 the City will work to ban smoking in mulitfamily units; apartments, condos and townhomes.
BREATHE California supports smoking bans in public and shared spaces.
Why?
- Tobacco smoke drifts.
- In in multi-unit housing, smoke enters through plumbing, electrical systems, cabinets and closets, ceiling fans, fireplaces, ventilation systems, under doors from halls.
- Smoke also enters windows and doors from smoking on patios, balconies and in courtyards.
- Architects agree that "secondhand smoke permeates building materials and allows for transmission to adjacent spaces."
- Tobacco smoke which enters an apartment or home on a regular basis is a health hazard. It's not like passing a person smoking on the street. The toxins in smoke can attach to furniture, clothing and surfaces.
- There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke.
