Los Angeles – NOVEMBER WAS NATIONAL COPD AWARENESS MONTH. Awareness is just the beginning. Early diagnosis and treatment can extend quality of life.

BREATHE LA is proud to have joined the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s (NHLBI’s) COPD Learn More Breathe Better campaign in observance of COPD Awareness Month 2008 with a Public Awareness Campaign and free public workshops.

COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease – EPOC in Spanish) is a serious lung disease that makes breathing difficult. It kills more than 120,000 Americans each year, affects one in four adults over the age of 45, kills more women than men, and is projected to be the third leading cause of death by 2020. But, there is reason for hope. There are treatment options that can improve the quality of life for people living with the disease. That’s why BREATHE LA COPD Awareness Campaign is so important. It is estimated that less than half of COPD cases are diagnosed and women are much less likely than men to be diagnosed early when treatment can avert costly complications.
