BREATHE LA Protects the Breath of Life : promoting clean air and healthy lungs through research, education and technology.

Annual Report 2008-2009

With almost daily toxic emissions from cars, ports, factories, pollen, dust, and annual wild fires, Los Angeles has the dirtiest air in America. 90% of residents live in neighborhoods that violate state air quality standards. Asthma rates continue to rise, keeping kids home from school and parents away from their jobs. California's bad air contributes to almost 9,000 deaths and $71 billion in healthcare costs each year. And for those with emphysema, lung cancer, tuberculosis and other forms of lung disease, the daily act of breathing can be a struggle.

Since 1903, BREATHE LA remains committed to Protect the "Breath of Life"® . We are the oldest voluntary health organization in California. Since our founding as the Los Angeles Society for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis, we have delivered a host of critical services to promote clean air and to help those suffering lung ailments. While modern medicine has claimed victory over some of the worst plagues of the world, we have not yet turned the corner on lung disease.

We are proud of what we have accomplished, but there remains a long road ahead of us to raise awareness, advocate for clean air and develop treatments that improve quality of life amidst deadly, debilitating diseases. We ask your help to extend our long tradition of caring to meet the challenge of providing clean air and healthy lungs today and in the future. Your continued support will help us turn the tragedy of lung disease into hope for a healthier future.
