Green Christmas Tree - Good for the Planet? Bad for the Planet?

Ah, the enchantment of a traditional white Christmas ... but in Los Angeles the closest we can hope to come is the tradition of a fragrant fresh cut Christmas tree.

But wait. What about our green goals to protect the planet, to be environmentally responsible, to plant trees, to have a holly, jolly Christmas that makes "green" sense?

BREATHE LA Supports Governor's EPA Lawsuit

Do you BREATHE? Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Attorney General Jerry Brown have done the right thing to file suit against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) for its failure to act on California's request for a waiver to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from cars and light trucks sold in the state. California has been waiting for a decision from the U.S. EPA for almost two years. There is no more time to waste.

BREATHE LA Opposes Governor's Proposal

BREATHE LA and Breathe California strongly oppose the Governor's proposal to use $1.3 billion in Public Transportation Account funding for programs traditionally funded via the General Fund.

If enacted, the Governor's cuts to the Public Transportation Account would devastate the State Transit Assistance Program, the state's only transit operations assistance program. This action could negatively affect transit agencies and service at a time when service increases are important to help meet air quality standards and quality of life goals.

California Air Resources Board Takes Next Step To Establish 2020 Emissions Standards

BREATHE LA applauds the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for taking the next step in establishing the California emissions standards for the year 2020. This week, CARB released its staff report titled "California 1990 Greenhouse Gas Emissions Level and 2020 Emissions Limit." In compliance with The Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 (AB 32) CARB is required to determine, by January 1, 2008, the statewide greenhouse gas emissions limit for the year 2020 based on the 1990 emissions level.

Hay Fever and Allergies

Allergies can be active all year. Here are some tips to help with seasonal hay fever.

Indoor Air Quality

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) deals with the content of interior air that can affect your health and comfort. IAQ is affected by what gets put into the air (pollution sources) and how well air moves in and out of the environment (ventilation). Numerous studies highlight a direct connection between air pollution and lung disease. Because children breathe at faster rates than adults, IAQ is important for all schools and child care sites. This can be especially important for children with asthma.

Caring Comes Naturally to BREATHE LA Researcher

Coughing doesn't bother Margaret Nield. Perhaps that's why she has devoted her professional life to caring for patients with COPD.

COPD is most often characterized by shortness of breath and a persistent cough. Those over the age of 40 with a history of smoking are particularly at risk, however 1 in 6 people with COPD have never smoked. COPD is the number four cause of death in the United States, it cannot be cured, but it can be treated.
