In SoCalGas’ service territory, over 95 percent of the homes use natural gas for home heating and water heating. The natural gas sector’s greenhouse gas emissions already are below 1990 levels, which is where they need to be under the state’s AB32 greenhouse regulation by 2020.

SoCalGas’ energy efficiency programs and building standards have already contributed to California’s future sustainability. SoCalGas is also committed to exploring and investing in new technologies to help make our air, lungs and environment healthier.

Natural gas is the enabler of renewable generation, and SoCalGas is taking advantage of this relationship.  For example, solar water heating and solar thermal heating both essentially utilize natural gas backup. SoCalGas customers receive rebates for installing these new technologies.

SoCalGas helped the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority in its efforts to have its massive 2,228 vehicle fleet use only natural gas. Because of the switch from diesel to compressed natural gas, Metro avoids emitting nearly 300,000 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions per day.
