O24u Facilitators' Guide Module 1

Activity Time:
30-45 minutes
Required Materials:
  • A glass/jar of water
  • Stick of celery with the leaves still on it
  • Red or blue food coloring
Learning Objective:

Understand the effect of a contaminated water cycle on living things.

Procedure:
  1. Carefully cut off the bottom of the celery
  2. Put a couple of drops of food coloring into the glass of water. Pretend this is pollution. Watch it spread out in the glass until all the water turns the same color.
  3. Put the celery in the glass. Pretend that this is a little plant, tree or even a person or animal that drinks from the ground.  Let the celery stalk sit there for a few hours.
  4. Wait a little while, go backand check out the celery. Cut it and you'll be able to see how the 'polluted' water has moved through the stalk.  This experiment proves that our air and water cycle have a very fragile relationship which affects all living things on the planet.
Discussion:
  1. Were you surprised to see the effects of water pollution?
  2. To what extent does air pollution affect water pollution in your city?
  3. What can you do to prevent water pollution?
