TUTD has once again collaborated with UCSF to look at the impact of the May 10 ratings announcement on tobacco in film by the MPAA on tobacco depictions in youth rated films. Unfortunately, our findings at 6 months are the same as at 5 months – the new policy has had no impact on the amount of tobacco portrayed in youth rated films. We will be releasing the study to the media today (press released attached) and UCSF will be running an ad in Variety tomorrow.

What is Emphysema?

Emphysema is a serious disease that affects the lungs. While symptoms may appear rapidly and quickly become severe, the disease itself develops over a long period of time.

When a person is suffering from emphysema, the tiny air sacs (called alveoli) in the lungs are damaged and lose their ability to stretch. This allows air to become trapped in the lungs, making it difficult to exchange with new air. This makes it hard to breathe and can lead to a host of lung problems as well as death.

What is COPD?

COPD stands for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and is the leading cause of disability and the fourth leading cause of death in the United States, killing 117,000 people annually. COPD is a classification of lung diseases, which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema, that make breathing extremely difficult. In patients with COPD, the airways of the lungs thicken, close and may also fill with mucus, thus reducing air flow. COPD can lead to weakness, exhaustion, loss of body weight, and heart failure.

BREATHE California of Los Angeles County (BREATHE LA) supports Coalition for Smoke-Free Los Angeles Parks' initiative to ban smoking in all LA County parks.

In 2002, California passed a law requiring a 25-feet smoke-free zone around playgrounds and sandbox areas in order to protect kids from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke. Unfortunately, these zones are not clearly defined and can cause confusion regarding the boundaries of the state law as evidenced by cigarette butts and other tobacco refuse found in these areas.

The Belmont City Council recently approved one of the toughest anti-smoking law in California, and possibly the nation.

NO SMOKING in indoor and outdoor workplaces,public spaces (parks, sports fields) and the most controversial, a ban on smoking inside condominiums, townhouses and apartments.

Smoking will still be allowed on the city's streets and sidewalks, in single-family homes and in designated outdoor smoking areas.

Belmont is not alone in drafting extreme no-smoking ordinances.
