O24u Facilitators' Guide Module 6: Alternate and Renewable Fuels
Activity Time:
45-60 minutes
Required Materials:
  • 18-gauge copper wire
  • Wire clippers
  • Steel paper clip
  • Sheet of coarse sandpaper
  • Lemon
Learning Objective:
  • Understanding the potential of alternate sources of energy
Procedure:
  1. Strip 2 inches of insulation from the copper wire. Cut the 2 inches of bare wire with the clippers.
  2. Straighten out the paper clip and cut about 2 inches of the straightened steel wire.
  3. Use sandpaper to smooth any rough spots on the wire or paper clip.
  4. Roll the lemon on a hard surface to allow it to become juicy. Be careful not to rupture the lemon's skin.
  5. Push the paper clip and wire into the lemon, close to each other but without letting them touch.
  6. Moisten your tongue with saliva and touch the tip of both the wire and paper clip.
  7. You should feel a slight tingling on your tongue and a slight metallic taste.
Discussion:
  • Why did you feel a reaction when your moist tongue touched the metal?
  • Name any additional alternate sources of energy. How are they used?
  • Why is it important to use alternate energy sources? What do you use?
