Activity: Personalized Pencil Holder
O24u Facilitators' Guide Module 5: Reduce, Recycle and Reuse
Activity Time:
30-45 minutes
Required Materials:
- A flat piece of cardboard (any shape — also try using a round cheese box, or tops from boxes of oats)
- Newspaper and/or magazine pages
- Photographs (copies)
- Several toilet paper and paper towel rolls
- Crayons
- Markers
- Paints and brushes
- Glue/paste
Learning Objective:
- Incorporate reused materials into a new craft
Procedure:
- Cut the toilet paper and paper towel rolls into different sizes.
- Glue three different size rolls to the top of the cheese box, oats lids, or cardboard.
- Get creative! Decorate the holder by gluing on images or lettering you’ve cut out of magazines and newspapers. Using photographs can give it that personal touch.
- You can also decorate with colored thread or string, or recycled colored paper.
- You can give it as a gift or place it on your own desk and fill it up with supplies.
Discussion:
- List the recycled material used to create your project.
- What did you learn about using recycled materials?
- Next time, what additional recycled supplies would you use?
