O24u Facilitators' Guide Module 5: Reduce, Recycle and Reuse
Activity Time:
30-45 minutes
Required Materials:
  • A flat piece of cardboard (any shape — also try using a round cheese box, or tops from boxes of oats)
  • Newspaper and/or magazine pages
  • Photographs (copies)
  • Several toilet paper and paper towel rolls
  • Crayons
  • Markers
  • Paints and brushes
  • Glue/paste
Learning Objective:
  • Incorporate reused materials into a new craft
Procedure:
  1. Cut the toilet paper and paper towel rolls into different sizes.
  2. Glue three different size rolls to the top of the cheese box, oats lids, or cardboard.
  3. Get creative! Decorate the holder by gluing on images or lettering you’ve cut out of magazines and newspapers. Using photographs can give it that personal touch.
  4. You can also decorate with colored thread or string, or recycled colored paper.
  5. You can give it as a gift or place it on your own desk and fill it up with supplies.
Discussion:
  • List the recycled material used to create your project.
  • What did you learn about using recycled materials?
  • Next time, what additional recycled supplies would you use?
