O24u Facilitator's Guide Module 5: Reduce, Recycle and Reuse
Activity Time:
30-45 minutes
Required Materials:
  • 6 CONES/MARKERS
  • BIG EARTH BALL (or draw with chalk on ground)
  • RECYCLABLE GOODS
  • RECYCLE BIN/BOX
  • TRASH CANS/BIN/BOX
Learning Objective:
  • To save or recycle as many objects as possible in the time limit
Rules:
  1. Two teams are lined up at the start line.
  2. One player from each team races to a trash can/box of recyclable goods.
  3. After getting an object from the can, the student must go to the earth (big ball) and run a set number of times around it once and place the item in its appropriate recycling container.
  4. As soon as the previous student returns to the team's start line, the next player may begin.
  5. All players repeat until time expires or all objects have been recycled.
  6. Use caution — multiple players from various teams will be running around the earth at the same time, so please warn students to be aware of other players.
  7. If all items are not recycled, the winner is the team with the most players complete.
Discussion:
  • Discuss why certain items had higher/lower number of laps.
  • Why is it important to recycle?
  • What kinds of things do you do to recycle?
  • What kinds of things could you do to help others recycle?
