O24u Facilitators' Guide Module 5: Reduce, Recycle, Reuse
Activity Time:
45-60 minutes, depending on materials available
Required Materials:

Enthusiasm and creativity!

Learning Objective:
  • To understand and identify common environmental material and vocabulary
Procedure:
There are many variations of how to play Charades. One format:
  1. Divide into teams.
  2. Think of a bunch of common objects that can be RECYCLED, REUSED, REDUCED to be acted out, and write the name of each object on a slip of paper. Each object can be made of various materials and may include more then one type of RECYCLABLE, REUSABLE, and REDUCED materials (bed, skateboard, shoes). Get creative!
  3. These slips of paper will be given to the opposite team.
  4. Each team not only has to name the object, but also needs to say if it can be RECYCLED, should be REDUCED, or is REUSEABLE.
  5. Write a player’s name on each slip of paper: Make sure that younger kids get easy titles.

When pantomiming: First, indicate to your team whether you’re going to mime an object found in your house, office, school, outdoors, indoors… anywhere. Next, indicate how many words are in the title. (Hold up the number of fingers.) Start acting silly!

You can use clues to help out your teammates, such as:

  • “Sounds like” — cup your hand around your ear
  • “Little word”: bring your thumb and index fingers close together
  • The people guessing should now call out every little word they can think of (“on, in, the, and”) until you gesticulate wildly to indicate the right word
  • “Longer version of the word”: pretend to stretch a rubber band
  • “Shorter version of the word”: chop with your hand
  • “CLOSE, but keep guessing!”: frantically wave hands to keep the guesses coming
Discussion:
  • What objects were the hardest to figure out? Why?
  • Were all the objects RECYCLABLE, REUSABLE, and REDUCED materials?
  • Did it surprise you that any of the objects were RECYCLABLE, REUSABLE,and REDUCED materials?
  • Why?
