O24u Facilitators' Guide Module 5: Reduce, Recycle, Reuse
Activity Time:
60 minutes
Required Materials:
  • Chalk board or white board
  • Markers or chalk
  • Paper
  • Pencils
Learning Objective:
  • As a team, students will discuss common "how to" methods of REDUCING commonly overused materials
Procedure:
  1. Separate group into two teams. If each team has more than 10 team members, separate into smaller teams (enabling each student to have a chance to answer).
  2. Name your teams, chose a captain (rotate captains with material change) and number each member of each team. Line up your teams, so that member #1 is first and so on.
  3. To decide which team goes first, have each team come up with a list of four REDUCEABLE items that contribute to reducing air pollution. Allow a minute for discussion (ONLY the captains can answer). Whichever team’s captain raises his or her hand first and answers the question correctly, that team goes first. Here is a list of materials that should be REDUCED:
    • Paper
    • Fuel
    • Water
    • Electricity
  4. Choose one of the REDUCEABLE materials above and write it on the board so that all teams can see it. Let’s use paper as an example.
  5. Starting with member #1 of the first team, each member gets a chance to name one way of reducing his or her use of paper. Write it on the board. If that member cannot describe one way of REDUCING his or her use of paper, the other team gets a chance to answer.

  6. Rotate through the REDUCEABLE materials, until all materials are discussed or time runs out.

Discussion:
  • Review the board with the students. Allow them to call out (as a group) each way the materials were able to be REDUCED.
  • How are you and your family helping to REDUCE the uses of these materials?
  • Did you learn any new skills in REDUCING your daily use of these materials?
  • If so, what? And will you start using your new skill today?
