O24u Facilitators' Guide Module 1

Activity Time:
30 -45 minutes
Required Materials:

Chalk (for playground surface) or white board with markers

Learning Objective:

Using environmental vocabulary and terms, participants will guess what each team member is drawing to complete the phrase.

Procedure:

Review the Air Pollution and Environmental vocabulary with the group. Separate the group into two teams. Name the teams with environmental significant names (such as resident recyclers or clean air kids). Sit each team in a semi circle, with both teams together in one big circle “Earth”.

Each team gets a turn (timed: 1 minute) to draw the vocabulary word or term to the best of their ability. If the team cannot identify the word or phrase in the allotted time, the other team gets a chance to answer for the point. After each team answers correctly, the person who drew gets to choose the next player to draw by playing a round of "Duck, Duck, Goose" around the their "Earth" circle.

To allow for creativity, the ‘drawer’ can choose the answer to the following questions to be drawn.

Below is listed a variety of environmental terms and vocabulary.

  • Something you can ride instead of a car
    • skate board, bike, bus, train
  • A tree provides
    • clean air, oxygen, shade, low energy costs
  • What provides light and heat
    • the sun
  • You can do this to your glass bottles
    • recycle, use it for crafts
  • It is part of the climate system
    • weather, precipitation, temperature
  • Involved in the greenhouse effects
    • sun, air pollution, humans

Bonus: Have each group choose a term for the opposite team to draw.

Discussion:
  • What new words did you learn?
  • Each group should name a word or phase to add to the game for next time.
  • Which of the terms have you heard before? Where and when did you hear it?
