Required Materials: 

For each student:

Learning Objective: 

Hands-on learning allowing participants to use there creativity and knowledge of terms to materials in our environment.

Procedure: 

After reviewing the Air Pollution and Environmental Change module, divide group into pairs or larger groups (depending on number of children). Allow ample time to collect the scavenger hunt list and for post-activity show and tell.

Remember each group will have collected different items for each scavenger hunt list, so discussion time is very important.

Scavenger Hunt List ( download/print )

  1. A leaf that has fallen from a tree.
    (Bonus: has been chewed on, not by you)
  2. A piece of litter not placed in a trash can.
  3. A source of air pollution ________________________________
  4. Something that can be recycled.
  5. Something that is not biodegradable.
  6. A recycling bin (circle) yes or no
  7. Something that reminds you of yourself.
  8. Someone using an alternate form of transportation - a bike, skate board or traveling by bus. (circle) yes or no
  9. Something beautiful.
  10. A piece of plastic.
  11. How many trees are there? __________
  12. Something you can use in an art project.
  13. Something that shines.
  14. A rock with a leaf or other fossil print embedded in it.
  15. A piece of metal.
Rules: 
  • Only collect items on the ground.
  • Be careful when picking up items in the playground – avoid any items that may be sharp or cause you harm.
  • DO NOT take anything live from a tree or an animal.
Discussion: 
  • What items were the hardest to find? Name some examples of items found.
  • What was the easiest item to find? Why? Name some of the items found.
  • What can be added to the playground to make it more environmentally friendly?
