Do you BREATHE? Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Attorney General Jerry Brown have done the right thing to file suit against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) for its failure to act on California's request for a waiver to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from cars and light trucks sold in the state. California has been waiting for a decision from the U.S. EPA for almost two years. There is no more time to waste.

The time for action is now. BREATHE LA applauds the Governor's vigorous and visionary leadership on air quality issues.

BREATHE LA and Breathe California strongly oppose the Governor's proposal to use $1.3 billion in Public Transportation Account funding for programs traditionally funded via the General Fund.

If enacted, the Governor's cuts to the Public Transportation Account would devastate the State Transit Assistance Program, the state's only transit operations assistance program. This action could negatively affect transit agencies and service at a time when service increases are important to help meet air quality standards and quality of life goals.

BREATHE LA applauds the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for taking the next step in establishing the California emissions standards for the year 2020. This week, CARB released its staff report titled "California 1990 Greenhouse Gas Emissions Level and 2020 Emissions Limit." In compliance with The Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 (AB 32) CARB is required to determine, by January 1, 2008, the statewide greenhouse gas emissions limit for the year 2020 based on the 1990 emissions level.

What is Pneumonia?

Pneumonia (noo-mohn-yuh) is a very common illness caused by a serious infection or inflammation of the lungs.

When harmful germs get past the lungs' defense systems and start to multiply, they may cause an infection in the lungs known as pneumonia. This infection prevents air from getting deep into the lungs, making it difficult for oxygen to get to the blood stream. Without the right amount of oxygen in the blood stream, blood cells cannot work properly. As a result, pneumonia can have a serious impact on the entire body.

Heart Disease Patients Should Avoid Pollution

Heart disease plagues 16 million in the United States alone.

According to a recent European study, researchers have found that exercising in areas with diluted diesel exhaust can diminish a significant anticlotting substance in the bloodstream. In the study, a drop in heart activity was two to six times greater for men when they exercised in a polluted environment. This is bad news for heart disease patients, who are at a greater risk to induce ischemia (lack of blood flow and oxygen to the heart).
