TB and Immigration

According to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Tuberculosis Control Program Epidemiology Department , data is not collected on legal vs. illegal immigrants related to transmission of Tuberculosis. TB Control health educators note, however, that while illegal immigrants may contribute to a portion of TB cases in the U.S. and L.A. County, they certainly do not constitute a majority.

History of the Trudeau Society

BREATHE LA Trudeau Society of Greater Los Angeles is named in honor of Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau (1848-1915), the first doctor to develop the sanatorium concept of treating tuberculosis. A tuberculosis survivor, Dr. Trudeau discovered that with rest, fresh air, and a balanced diet, TB patients could completely recover. In 1885, Dr. Trudeau opened the Adirondack Cottage Sanatorium, best known as the "Little Red Cottage," at Saranac Lake, NY, the first sanatorium for TB patients in the U.S.

BREATHE LA Puts TB in Perspective

Tuberculosis (TB) was in the news a great deal in recent months. Although the potentially deadly and contagious disease remains a concern, the important thing to consider here at home, in Los Angeles County, is that TB infection rates in the general public are low and have remained low for a number of years. The low rates of TB infection in Los Angeles are thanks to the vigilance and hard work of the Los Angeles County Department of TB Control.

BREATHE History

BREATHE LA was first formed in 1903 as the Los Angeles Society for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis. The organization served the city's growing population of more than 300,000. For more than 30 years, the organization was committed to increasing public awareness about the tuberculosis (TB) epidemic and other lung-related diseases-including asthma, bronchitis and emphysema-and working towards eradication.

Advances in technology, healthcare access and medicine all contributed to a dramatic downturn in active TB cases.

Statistics Demonstrating The Need To Control TB In the US

TB in the U.S.

  • 14,517 TB cases were reported in 2004, a 2.3% decrease from 2003.
  • 19 states experienced increases in their number of TB cases.
  • 42% of all cases were in CA, NY and TX.
  • 12 states have rates above the national average.
  • The case rate is highest among Asians and Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders.
