Cold Ironing Cleans Air at Ports
Scott Johns doesn’t look like a revolutionary. A personable guy-next door type, Johns looks more like a college student than an agent of revolutionary technology that can change the way we live and breathe in Los Angeles. Johns is determined to get the kinks out of air pollution with cold ironing technology at Port of Long Beach. The patented technology provides temporary electrical power to ships at dock to reduce and eliminate air pollutants from idling diesel engines. Ships simply ‘plug in’ at dock and can remain powered up without spewing pollutants into the air while they wait to load and unload cargo.
Cold ironing is just one of the technologies that can improve air quality and quality of life in Los Angeles ( attached is detailed presentation regarding the technology ) and is not new. US Navy vessels are cold-ironed and the Port of Long Beach is already onboard with cold-ironing.
The port was the first to sign “a ship-to-shore electrical power hookup to reduce diesel emissions … directly tied to a lease. The agreement to install the electrical hookup--known as "cold ironing"--comes as environmental groups and local community activists have put increasing pressure on the ports and shippers to clean up the sprawling complex. The hookups allow ships to run their engines with clean electricity while they're in port, instead of running their emissions-belching on-board engines. Together, the operations at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are the single largest source of diesel and other pollutants in the entire Southern California region.â€
