This report serves as an overall recap of activities and accomplishments in 2008-2009 fiscal year. A more complete report will be produced in fall 2009 at the completion of financial audit and will be published on BREATHE LA website as well as printed for distribution to donors, media and government, corporate and private foundations. PROGRAMS O24u Environmental Education
O24u Environmental Education
Program was
Founded in 2004 with funding from BP and AQMD
- BREATHE LA O24u has become a thriving program that
- served over 4,000 children in Spring 2008 and
- is poised to serve over 6,000 children in 2009
- One of the many activities is Clean Air Olympics

BREATHE LA O24u Online has generated 1600 visits by
students, teachers and community members and
O24u webpages have generated over 2,500 visitors to

PROGRAMS COPD Pulmones Libres
- Pulmones Libres COPD Awareness
Latino Outreach Program was Established in 2008 with funding from QueensCare grant
- BREATHE LA Pulmones Libres has garnered national attention for BREATHE LA as a pioneer in Spanish language COPD awareness.
- 78 individuals have been served with Pulmones Libres COPD management classes with over 88% demonstrating an increase in knowledge through the class, conducted with a Respiratory Therapist in community inner city settings.

COPD Awareness Campaign 2008
NOVEMBER 14th was
declared COPD AWARENESS DAY by the
Los Angeles
City Council and served as the official launch of Pulmones Libres
Dr Paul Simon, Director of Los Angeles County Department of Health
Los Angeles Department of Public Health Division served as keynote speaker
The public awareness campaign included
- 30 e-Billboards: 74,738 views (Donated Value of $30,063)
- 3 backlit mall displays: 123K views (Discounted value of $12K)
- 3 ads (Variety, Daily News, LA Health): 600K views
- 3 radio campaigns reached
- 118,800 Spanish & 450K English-speaking listeners
BREATHE LA COPD webpages have generated over 4,178 unique page views since the
start of the campaign in November 2008
PROGRAMS COPD Pulmones Libres
To date, 31 community outreach activities have been conducted including KNBC Telemundo Hispanic Health Fair....here you see our staff with Respiratory Therapist and health sciences student volunteers who staffed our booth
1172 individuals have been reached by the Pulmones Libres Program with potentially life saving information on COPD.
As the grant draws to a close, renewed funding sources are sought while expansion plans for this vital and much needed behavioral health research program are being explored.

4UNI Teens Helping Teens Quit Smoking World No Tobacco Day 2009
- Held a second annual event on May 30th
- BREATHE LA 4UNI students took part in the event. Founder Chetna Singh also took part in the promotional campaign with KIIS Radio interviews which aired the week before the event and reached 149,092 listeners

- BREATHE LA Granada Hills Charter High School chapter President Young Park, appeared on Local Edition, CNN reaching 800,000 homes in the San Fernando Valley

4UNI World No Tobacco Day 2009 took place at Santa Monica Third Street Promenade and included Hula Hooping, Text 2 Quit Challenges, Music, and more!
- Over 30 Volunteers took part from 9 schools including: Santa Monica College, Cal State LA, USC, UCLA, Fairfax High, Brightwood Elementary, Mark Keppel High, Beverly Hills High, and students nurses from NOCRP.
- In addition to attendees,
- World No Tobacco Day event pages attracted over 500 web visitors to BREATHE LA Website
PROGRAMS - ASTHMA & ASTHMA LUNG POWER
- BREATHE LA Asthma Book in English and Spanish are available on BREATHE LA website and
- 6,800 of the printed Asthma Books have been distributed to Kaiser Permanente Asthma clinics in Los Angeles
- Asthma Lung Power has reached the community with colorful brochures, in five languages ( English, Spanish, Armenian, Chinese, Korean ) which have been provided to over 1,600 in communities throughout Los Angeles

ADVOCACY
- BREATHE LA Advocacy Committee is moving forward with an effective plan to put us on the map for clean air and lung health legislative issues. The committee, headed by Kevin Hall, is already moving forward on a number of issues important to BREATHE LA
- BREATHE LA GREEN SALON Series ... the schedule continues ... if you have not yet been there, I urge you to include time in your schedule to join us at least once this year
BREATHE LA GREEN SALON Series 2009, a continuation of Pollution & Solutions Salon series 2008 continues to include leaders in our community in dialogue on the intersection between clean air and commerce
- 2008 series included a thought provoking faithbased panel, here on the lower left you see Sister Marilyn Rudy of Earth Harmony with a community attendee
- 2009 first salon welcomed DWP's David Nahai
- Other Salons have included S. David Freeman, filmmaker Josh Tickell and
- this past week's GREEN SALON at the Port of Los Angeles included Port Authority Commissioners and Longshoremen
RESEARCH
- Center for Healthy Lungs research projects continue to bring BREATHE LA attention and continue to provide results that improve the lives of those with lung disease. Current projects include

- Dr Cooper and Dr Storer COPD and EXERCISE project and
- Dr Kwong's new project, BREATH OF LIFE INDEX for Asthma Lung Power

- Continue to attract exceptional lung health leaders and compelling topics for professional development of the members of the society

VOLUNTEERS MAKE IT HAPPEN
- BREATHE LA Volunteers continue to accomplish great things and to speak and serve on our behalf
- Over 1350 volunteers, interns and pro-bono professionals served in a variety of capacities to augment staff effort in 2008-2009
- Professionals included Attorneys, Public Relations, Marketing, Entertainment, Environmental and Public Health professionals and graduate students.
- Projects included World No Tobacco Day, Advocacy, website upgrade and launch, outreach and more
